The team at AfternoonTea.co.uk recently visited one of London’s most iconic landmarks,The Shard, for a classic Afternoon Tea and to take in the gorgeous views on a beautiful Summer’s day.
The Shard is one of the most iconic venues in London with up to 6,000 visitors passing through its restaurants, offices and hotels a day. Not wanting to miss out, we decided to visit the Ting lounge at Shangri-la and experience their timeless Afternoon Tea.
As we walked into the lobby, we were directed to the lift for the Ting which features one button that takes guests swiftly to the 35th floor. Stepping out of the lifts, we were immediately greeted to the iconic London skyline as the 360-degree ceiling to floor windows offer the perfect view of new London versus old London. We were taken to our table next to the window with a perfect view of the city skyline; London Bridge to the right, and the Sky Garden and the Gherkin to the left. It seemed the weather was on our side too, with glorious blue skies all around us.
We ordered a glass of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label champagne by our charming Greek waiter, Thanos, who also kindly explained the menu and the many different types of tea they have on offer. A cup of the Shangri-la Welcome Tea precedes Afternoon Tea as a palette cleanser, which has blends of white and jasmine tea and is served cold and superbly refreshing.
Beginning with the sandwiches, we were served the traditional fillings such as cucumber and cream cheese which was served on a dark brown bread with thin slices of cucumber; and smoked salmon with crème fraiche which was utterly fresh and elegant. Our favourite was the mango and chicken mayonnaise sandwich, a more unique offering, which perfectly paired the sweet flavourings of the mango against chilli spice and coriander.
Our tea arrived with a miniature sieve for the tea to be poured on top of which was a splendid addition to represent the quality of the afternoon and service at Ting. We ordered a light rosebud tea and white apricot tea - me and my companion both most certainly had quite the sweet tooth! The scones, covered to keep their warmth, were served with generous portions of clotted cream and strawberry jam. As we were enjoying our scones with a fresh refill of champagne, Thanos said his goodbye's while another waiter took over from him who was just as attentive and chatty, running us through the menu once more.
Moving on to the part we were most excited about, the sweets! All of the sweets had unique flavourings and looked almost too good to eat. We started with the exotic eclair, which was filled lovingly with summer fruits, and finished with the strawberry gateau which was light and the perfect balance of sweet and fruity without being overpowering. Our favourite, however, was the lemon tart; it was the most delicate of the desserts and seemed to melt away in your mouth.
All in all, the Afternoon Tea experience at Ting was exceptional; every effort was made by the staff to ensure it was a day to remember for me and my guest as we whiled away the Afternoon. We would highly recommend this Afternoon Tea, if not for the exquisite food, then for the breathtaking views that one simply must see to truly experience London in all its glory!
