Here at Afternoon Tea Towers the team are always on the look out for Afternoon Tea related news, reviews, seasonal menus, special events and competitions.
This week we were invited to the newly opened 5* InterContinental London - The 02 for a tea tasting session and a limited edition Afternoon Tea to celebrate the partnership of the Meridian Lounge at InterContinental 02 and The East India Tea Company.
The docklands area on which the hotel is situated was originally the main trade route for the import of tea in to Great Britain.
The tea tasting session and Afternoon Tea was held in the beautiful Meridian Lounge located on the ground floor of the hotel, which takes its name from the hotels location within Greenwich, a destination marking the starting point of every time zone in the world.
As soon as we walked into the hotel we were warmly greeted by the very courteous doorman and we made our way to the Meridian Lounge. My first impression was that it was open, airy and offering fantastic views of The City area of London through the panoramic floor to ceiling windows.
Situated next to the busy 02 arena the hotel gives visitors the chance to relax in comfort, while enjoying Afternoon Tea and a glass of champagne prior to attending one of the many events that are regularly held at the 02 arena.
The day began with a tea tasting session with the extremely knowledgeable Mr Lalith, who has over 35 years' experience working in the tea industry, starting his career as an 18-year-old working in the tea plantations of Sri Lanka. Together we sampled a selection of tea's from the East India Tea Company including Dragon Well Lung Ching and Staunton Earl Grey. My particular favourite was the Premium Milk Oolong, a creamy taste with a caramel infused aroma.
Following the very interesting tea tasting session, we were then treated to a sumptuous Afternoon Tea. The sandwiches arrived on a very inviting slate platter and consisted of classic egg mayonnaise on a brioche roll, salmon and dill cream spinach wrap, cucumber on saffron bread, and chicken on basil bread. All where beautifully presented, and more importantly tasted delicious.
After this the three tier cake stand arrived, and we started off with the freshly baked scones which did not disappoint! They came in both plain and buttermilk with apricot and fennel, accompanied by the usual clotted cream and jam, surely a favourite for everyone!
Last but not least we moved on to the cakes and pastries. To celebrate the East India Tea Company's partnership with InterContinental 02 we were treated to a variety of tea infused cakes including Darjeeling chai clipper boat creameux and Earl grey brûlée tart, as you can see they looked amazing and I can confirm they tasted delicious! My particular favourite was the strawberry cointreau verrine which arrived in a small pot and consisted of different layers' strawberry flavoured delightfulness! Everything was presented to the highest standards.
At the end of this lovely Afternoon Tea experience we were all given a tea infused cocktail which topped off a lovely experience at the Meridian Lounge at InterContinental London - The 02.
Afternoon Tea at Meridian Lounge at InterContinental London - The 02 is priced at £30 per person, or £42 per person including a glass of Champagne.
