Tea being poured in elegant surroundings. An example of Afternoon Tea etiquette.

There is a lot of talk at the moment about how to make the perfect cup of tea. Scientists at University College London made it their mission to find out - here are their findings.

Their research indicates that four out of five Britons aren't brewing their tea correctly. But don't fear, they've discovered how you can make the perfect cup of tea.

Much has been written about this topic and there are many variables to take into account, but finally here is the definitive method to make the perfect cuppa!

How to make the perfect cup of tea:

1. Use freshly boiled water

2. A warmed ceramic teapot is ideal, but mugs and cups will do nicely

3. Milk first or last? If you're making tea in a mug, add the milk later as the cold milk will lower the temperature so your tea won't brew as well. If you're pouring already brewed tea from a teapot, adding a splash of milk to into the cups first will be fine

4. Steep your tea for between two and five minutes, depending on your personal preference

5. The ideal drinking temperate is between 60 - 65C, so let it cool a little first
