Review: Amusement Mile Afternoon Tea at Park Row

by Nadia Ismail

Park Row is one of London’s most stylish venues, based on Batman and the DC comics, it is full of subtle references and hidden Easter eggs in the most sophisticated manner.

As you enter the venue, a secret passage behind a bookshelf is revealed where you descend into darkness arriving at Gotham City where their spectacular Afternoon Tea is served.

Whilst the venue is Batman themed, don’t expect waiters dressed as characters, rather clever nods to the comics are found in the elegant underground venue: The art on the walls are reflective of The Joker & Harley Quinn’s unstable relationship, and we are handed a Joker card upon placing our coats in the cloakroom.

Taking our seats next to a large floral fountain, we are served a pot of caramel popcorn, cascading with smoky liquid nitrogen. We are told to consume them quickly, so we can play around with having ‘dragon breath’! This is such a fun way to start the service and really sets the tone for the immersive experience.

The Afternoon Tea arrives on a three-tier stand, with a match box. Without ruining too much, you are told a story about The Joker & Harley Quinn's relationship before it all goes up in flames – quite literally!

Park Row’s fine dining experience has been translated wonderfully into a unique Afternoon Tea with a nod to traditional British aspects. Whilst the finger sandwiches consist of the customary flavours, they are all enhanced with additional aspects.

My personal favourite was the fried toast that added extra crunch, flavour and texture to the Coronation Chicken, sandwiched on turmeric bread. It was a really unique take on a traditional flavour and a comforting addition to a graceful affair. The egg was infused with truffle making it especially tasty, and the roasted aubergine had delicious flavours reminiscent of the Middle East.

As this Afternoon Tea has complimentary refills all three courses– the sandwiches, scones AND desserts! (Yes, you read that right!) We went for another round of sandwiches, this time receiving a selection from their allergen menu, which caters for Gluten Free, Vegan & Dairy Free. These were all very impressive and I couldn’t taste the difference between the two – they were just as flavoursome as the standard menu.
Whilst the sandwiches were so tasty, we could have had yet another round, we wanted to save space for the delightful sweet treats that remained on our stand!

The scones, which have delicious crisp shell and a soft warm centre have a raspberry option served alongside the plain with a homemade raspberry jam. They crumble apart perfectly for you to fill with lashings of clotted cream.

The dessert selection is breath taking. The Insta-famous ‘Kiss from a rose’ is served without the fanfare letting you focus on the delicate, dainty details in this intricate piece. A rose mousse shaped as the flower surrounds a lychee centre - it just so sublime, soft and perfumed with fantastic fruity floral notes.

The chocolate caramel slice is adorned with a white chocolate card embellished with the Joker. It is rich, with a smooth caramel centre and topped with a layer of chocolate ganache. The biscuit base adds texture to the silky topping that is soft yet decadent.

The final piece is a white chocolate heart dyed purple. Being informed to smash the solid shell, a soft vanilla mouse is exposed. Upon indulging further, a green passion fruit core oozes out. This is really a delicious treat for all the senses and the colours evoke memories of The Joker adding to the theme.

We then realise that the beautiful fountain that we were sat next to is actually a theatrical cocktail dispenser! Until 27th November, guests will receive this Lotus Flower Fountain Cocktail complimentary when booking through AfternoonTea.co.uk

There are so many delicious immersive elements making it really unique – starting with the nitro caramel popcorn that is served with cascading smoky liquid nitrogen, to the theatrical flame commencing your service, there is also a competition to enter whilst enjoying your tea to win a meal for two!

A fine dining venue and bar, this new addition to Park Row was nothing short of sublime, the magically majestic Afternoon Tea has so many elaborate details to discover and is one of London’s most immersive and theatrical experiences.

Amusement Mile Afternoon Tea at Park Row is priced from £40 per person and children under 6 dine for free. See full details here on how to book your experience with a Complimentary Glass of Sparkling Wine or Lotus Flower Fountain Cocktail until 27th November 2022.
