Review: A Matcha Masterclass & Sakura Afternoon Tea at Nobu Hotel London Portman Square

Nobu Matcha Masterclass Main Shot

The afternoon began with an intimate matcha masterclass led by Nobu’s expert team. We learned how matcha differs from standard green tea, the importance of using ceremonial-grade matcha, in this case Jenki matcha, explaining how high-quality matcha should have a vibrant green hue, a naturally smooth finish and gentle umami sweetness rather than bitterness.

One of the most enjoyable parts of the session was learning the whisking technique itself. We were shown how too much hot water can overpower the flavour and ruin the texture, while the correct amount allows the matcha to develop its signature creamy froth. Using a bamboo whisk, everyone had the opportunity to prepare their own drink - choosing between a matcha cocktail or mocktail variation - making the experience feel interactive and personal rather than performative.

Following the masterclass came the Sakura Afternoon Tea, which felt like the perfect accompaniment to the session.

The savoury selection included highlights such as spicy tuna crispy rice, sushi house rolls, smoked salmon shokupan club sandwiches and a decadent Nobu-style wagyu slider.

Desserts arrived in beautifully delicate form - from the nostalgic sweetness of the rhubarb and custard choux bun to soft, chewy matcha mochi and an indulgent whisky cappuccino dessert layered with deep coffee notes and subtle warmth.

No afternoon tea would be complete without scones, and here they arrived in both plain and matcha varieties, served alongside yuzu curd, ume shiso jam and clotted cream - a subtle Japanese twist on the British classic.

To accompany the food, guests could choose from an impressive array of black teas and East Asian-inspired blends, or even opt for a glass of sake. I chose the Assam black tea, which offered a rich malty aroma with deep, full-bodied flavour and subtle caramel warmth.

What truly elevates the experience is the atmosphere itself. The interiors at Nobu Hotel London Portman Square feel luxurious without being intimidating - soft lighting, minimalist Japanese influences and a calm ambience create the kind of environment where you genuinely want to slow down and savour the experience.

For anyone looking for a twist on the traditional afternoon tea in London, this is absolutely worth trying. It combines education, craftsmanship and indulgence in a way that feels immersive rather than gimmicky - perfect for matcha lovers, food enthusiasts or anyone wanting a more elevated afternoon experience in the city.

Available every Saturday from 12:30pm - 5:30pm, you can experience this for yourself.
