Review: Winter Wonderland Afternoon Tea at The Rubens

by Natasha (@ilovecakeandtea)

I spent a slow, cosy afternoon indulging in the Festive Afternoon Tea at The Rubens at The Palace - the kind of treat that instantly puts you in the Christmas spirit.

From the moment I stepped inside, the hotel’s warm, elegant atmosphere made it feel like the perfect seasonal escape.

Stepping into The Rubens during the festive season feels like entering a warm Christmas embrace. Soft lighting, plush interiors, and a live pianist set the perfect cosy tone. I began with a steaming glass of mulled wine before choosing my tea — and, true to form, I went for the classic Rubens black tea, comforting and beautifully balanced.

The savouries are festive without being overly rich: roast turkey with stuffing and cranberry mayo for a nostalgic touch, vibrant smoked salmon with beetroot cream cheese, robust roast beef with rocket and horseradish, creamy chicken with toasted almonds, and a perfectly simple cheddar and tomato on onion bread.

Rubens Winter Wonderland Afternoon Tea Scones

Warm scones — plain and spiced fruit — arrived beautifully soft and fragrant, ideal with clotted cream, lemon curd, or seasonal preserve.

The desserts are the real highlight. The clementine & almond caramel tart brings bright citrus warmth, the hazelnut Swiss roll adds praline richness, the Mont Blanc blends chestnut mousse with cassis, and the cranberry profiterole delivers a festive burst of flavour.

Overall, The Rubens’ Winter Wonderland Afternoon Tea blends tradition, creativity, and luxury in a way that feels truly special. If you’re seeking a heartfelt, elegant Christmas Afternoon Tea in London, this one definitely stands out.
