Review: Japanese-inspired Afternoon Tea at Aki London
Aki offers a beautifully considered take on the traditional British Afternoon Tea, bringing together the elegance of the ritual with the delicate flavours and artistry of Japan. Set within such a stunning location, the experience feels wonderfully serene and refined from the moment you arrive, with an atmosphere that makes it particularly lovely for a special afternoon.

The savoury selection is where the Japanese influence truly begins to shine. Traditional finger sandwiches are given an elegant Japanese twist, with beautifully balanced flavours and delicate presentation. Highlights include braised Wagyu with cucumber served in soft bao buns, golden yolk eggs with summer truffle rolled in a sushi-esque fashion, green tea smoked salmon with yuzu curd, and chicken katsu with tonkatsu Dijon mayonnaise in panko bread. They offer a lovely balance of familiar British Afternoon Tea tradition and distinctly Japanese flavours. There is also a thoughtful vegetarian alternative, ensuring the experience feels equally special for everyone.

One of the most charming departures from tradition is the dorayaki pancakes, which replace the usual scones. Served with a selection of fruit preserves and clotted cream, they are a delightful Japanese interpretation of the classic Afternoon Tea staple. Soft, subtly sweet and wonderfully moreish, they work beautifully with the cream and preserves and make a particularly memorable centrepiece to the experience.

The dessert and pâtisserie selection is equally impressive, with an assortment of beautifully crafted treats including yuzu and citrus tea cake, pistachio and raspberry tart, praline tea cake, milk chocolate and black sesame mousse, and matcha madeleines, topped with raspberry chocolate. The flavours are delicate yet distinctive, with ingredients such as yuzu, matcha and black sesame lending each pastry a sophisticated Japanese character.
Perhaps the most enchanting detail is the way the pâtisserie is presented. Served on a two-tiered stand designed to resemble a tree, the presentation feels almost like a piece of botanical art, perfectly complementing the tranquil, elegant surroundings. It is the sort of detail that makes the experience feel considered from start to finish and, naturally, makes for a beautiful presentation at the table.
The tea selection continues the Japanese theme, with a choice of Japanese teas including sencha, gyokuro and hojicha-style offerings alongside Chinese, Indian and Sri Lankan teas, as well as delicate herbal infusions and blends. There is plenty of choice, making it easy to pair the tea with the different courses.
Overall, Aki's Japanese-inspired Afternoon Tea is a wonderfully elegant experience that manages to honour the traditions of Afternoon Tea whilst giving them a distinctly Japanese sense of refinement. From the exquisite savouries and delightful dorayaki pancakes to the artistic tree-inspired pâtisserie stand and beautiful setting, every element feels thoughtfully curated and it is a wonderful way to spend a peaceful Afternoon Tea away from the hustle & bustle of nearby Oxford Street.
