Review: Summer Afternoon Tea at Corinthia London

by The AfternoonTea.co.uk Team

The Afternoon Tea at the Corinthia London presents a refined and immersive interpretation of this quintessential British tradition, combining a carefully curated menu with an elegant setting and a distinct sense of occasion. Served in the Crystal Moon Lounge, the experience is elevated by both its culinary precision and its thoughtful attention to seasonal and cultural detail.

The Crystal Moon Lounge provides a striking and atmospheric backdrop for Afternoon Tea, defined by its grand proportions and the presence of a magnificent Baccarat chandelier. The space is light-filled and tranquil, creating an environment that is both luxurious and calm, and ideally suited to unhurried dining.

Enhancing the setting is a seasonal installation created in collaboration with Lock & Co. Hatters, the country’s oldest milliners. This curated exhibition presents hats through the ages, celebrating the British summer social season. Referencing iconic events such as Wimbledon, the Henley Royal Regatta and Royal Ascot, the installation introduces a playful and distinctly British narrative. Displayed throughout the lounge, it offers a visual journey that complements the elegance and heritage of the Afternoon Tea experience.

The tea offering is extensive and thoughtfully composed, allowing guests to explore a range of blends throughout the service. From classic black teas to lighter floral and fruit infusions, the selection is designed to pair harmoniously with each stage of the menu. Guests are encouraged to sample multiple varieties, reinforcing the leisurely and indulgent nature of Afternoon Tea.

The savoury course begins with a carefully balanced selection of finger sandwiches, each prepared with precision and served on a variety of breads chosen to enhance both texture and flavour. The selection includes Secret Smokehouse smoked salmon paired with nori cream cheese on soft brioche, alongside pastrami complemented by sweet mustard mayonnaise and dill gherkin on Mediterranean bread. A traditional cucumber filling is elevated with crème fraîche, dill and lime and served on onion bread, while classic coronation chicken is presented on white bread. The final offering of curried Clarence Court egg mayonnaise on sourdough provides a gently spiced and well-rounded conclusion to the savoury course.

This combination reflects a harmonious balance between traditional Afternoon Tea favourites and contemporary flavour pairings, with subtle refinements adding depth while maintaining a recognisably classic structure.

A central feature of the Afternoon Tea is the scone course, which remains firmly rooted in tradition. Plain and sultana scones are served warm, accompanied by organic strawberry jam, elderflower and lemon curd, and Cornish clotted cream. The inclusion of elderflower and lemon curd introduces a gentle seasonal note, complementing the richness of the scones with a light, floral brightness. This course provides both comfort and authenticity, forming a well-judged transition between the savoury and sweet elements of the menu.

The sweet course is presented via an elegant cake trolley served at the table, offering guests the opportunity to select from a range of delicacies inspired by the season. This approach introduces an element of theatre and personalisation, distinguishing the Corinthia’s Afternoon Tea from more traditional tiered presentations.

The patisserie selection showcases a variety of flavours and textures, including an apricot Bakewell tart that offers a refined interpretation of a British classic, and a Kentish raspberry cheesecake set upon a speculoos sablé base, providing both richness and a subtle spiced note. A dark chocolate and salted caramel choux delivers a more indulgent element, while a Highgrove honey puff pastry introduces delicate sweetness and lightness. The elderflower cake reflects the seasonal theme with a floral freshness, complemented by additional offerings such as lemon drizzle and Victoria sponge, as well as pastries featuring elderflower curd.

Together, these elements create a balanced and visually elegant conclusion to the Afternoon Tea, with a progression of flavours that moves seamlessly from fruit and floral notes to deeper, more indulgent profiles.

Service throughout the Afternoon Tea is attentive, polished and well-paced, allowing guests to enjoy each course without interruption. The progression from savoury to sweet is seamless, and the flexibility to explore different teas enhances the overall sense of occasion.

The integration of the seasonal installation with the culinary offering creates a cohesive and memorable experience, where setting, service and menu are carefully aligned.

The Afternoon Tea at the Corinthia London is a sophisticated and thoughtfully executed experience that celebrates both tradition and seasonality. From the carefully composed finger sandwiches to the classic scones and the distinctive cake trolley, each element is designed with precision and balance.

Set within one of London’s most elegant hotel lounges and enriched by a celebration of British summer traditions, it stands as a distinguished expression of Afternoon Tea, offering a harmonious blend of heritage, flavour and refined presentation.
