Review: The Capital Hotel, Apartments & Townhouse Afternoon Tea

by Yasmin Rogers

Just a ‘scones’ throw from all the glamour and glitz of Harrods & Harvey Nicks. Right in the heart of Knightsbridge, you can find a place where it’s nearly always time for tea - The Capital Hotel, Apartments & Townhouse. There you will find an Afternoon Tea that is a fantastic treat and perfect for a post shopping pick me up.

Upon arrival I was greeted and shown to my table. My coat was checked in to the cloakroom (and easily retrieved on my way out). Within minutes of sitting down I was offered a glass of Prosecco, I mean who can say no to that on a rainy Thursday afternoon in London? And of course, some water for the table.

The Afternoon Tea itself was brought out on a two tiered cake stand. A rainbow of freshly cut finger sandwiches on the bottom level and very pretty cakes on the top. I was impressed with the sandwich selection of the classic Afternoon Tea fillings such as; Smoked Salmon, Ham, Egg & Cress, Coronation Chicken and the iconic cucumber. Of course there was not a crust to be found!

The sandwiches were followed by warm scones. Two each - one of the plain and one of the currenty variety. These are brought out separately to the sandwiches and cakes to ensure they are eaten warm. And served with generous saucers of cream and strawberry jam. And then it’s on to the cakes.

Oh the cakes! Sometimes it’s difficult to wait until after scones to dive into these... this was one of those occasions. I was delighted with the Red Velvet Cake, Coffee & Chocolate Cake as well as a Cheesecake! For me, the Red Velvet Cake was the show stopper. Which is a surprise as I am a coffee and coffee cake addict! It lived up to its name; velvety, creamy and moist. Perfectly washed down with a sip of Jasmine Sliver Needle Tea

The tea. For many it’s the cakes and the scones that make the Afternoon Tea experience. Whilst those are important, it’s imperative not to slack in the tea leaves department. The Capital Hotel, Apartments & Townhouse have a selection of loose leaf teas to be proud of. Their Earl Grey smells divine whilst it brews and tastes even better. On this occasion I indulged in a glass of Botter Prosecco and my friend, who doesn’t drink alcohol was brought a delightful Mocktail. These were the perfect pre-tea palette cleansers.

The experience was delightful. From the quality of the Afternoon Tea to the warm welcoming team at The Capital Hotel, Apartments & Townhouse. Highly recommended as the perfect stopping place for a bit of indulgence in the designer district.
