Rubens at the Palace, nestled near Buckingham Palace, offers an elegant, regal setting for Afternoon Tea. In celebration of Kids Week and Afternoon Tea Week, the venue presents a unique experience for families this summer. The Horrible Histories Children’s Afternoon Tea caters to little Princes and Princesses, ensuring everyone can enjoy this quintessentially British tradition.

Adorned with Royal-themed decor, and looking out on the Royal Mews, the location is perfect to expose little (and larger) kids to history in the most delicious of ways! Arriving on a traditional three tiered stand, both the children's and adults offering are a stunning sight. 

The sandwich selection includes classic fillings such as cucumber and cream cheese, smoked salmon, and egg mayonnaise. Each sandwich is meticulously crafted, with fresh ingredients and soft bread. My personal favourite was the addition of crushed hazelnuts around the chicken sandwich adding an additional crunch, while the smoked salmon canape on a cape seed loaf provides a delightful contrast of flavors. The egg mayonnaise sandwich is creamy and comforting, perfect for traditionalists, and for children a Raspberry Jam & Smooth Peanut Butter and  Roasted Hazelnut Spread sandwich is also served alongside the savoury selection. 

If you're a fan of scones (and quite frankly who isn't!) this Afternoon Tea is a must. Alongside the traditional plain and raisin, there is also a delicious savoury cheese scone - which dare I say might be the best of them all! These warm, buttery scones steal the show. They arrive freshly baked, with a golden crust and a soft interior. Accompanied by clotted cream, lemon curd and strawberry jam, these scones are the epitome of a classic British Afternoon Tea.

The children sweet selection is an amalgamation of delicate treats to satisfy young taste buds.The addition of a crown lollypop and printed macaron is a subtle nod to the Horrible Histories theme, and the chocolate filled choux is every child's dream! Bursting with flavour it was difficult not to steal it from my son's plate!

Adults fear not - the patisserie selection on the grown up menu is divine! The crown cheesecake is refreshing and light with exotic summer fruit flavours, but the pistachio choux was breathtaking! Filled with a rich, decadent pistachio paste and surrounded with a lighter pistachio creme, it was truly special! 

The staff were kind and attentive, offering refills of both tea, sandwiches and scones meaning by the time we were about to tuck into the sweets we were somewhat full. This was not as issue as we were given dainty red boxes to fill with what we couldn't finish to take the magic home.

Younger guests indulging in the Horrible Histories Afternoon Tea are also able to take home something special as they receive a small gift in line with the theme of the performance. Alongside the crown and milkshake found on the standard Prince and Princess menu, the Horrible Histories activity pack and feather pen is a delightful touch that adds to the overall experience.     ◦
