Review: Afternoon Tea at L'Oscar London

by The AfternoonTea.co.uk Team

Tucked discreetly along Southampton Row, just moments from Covent Garden and the theatrical heart of the West End, L’oscar London offers an Afternoon Tea that is as much about setting as it is about taste. Housed within a Grade II listed former Baptist church, the hotel has been exquisitely restored in an opulent Edwardian Baroque style by Jacques Garcia, resulting in interiors that shimmer with gilded detailing, mirrored ceilings, and an illuminated onyx bar: altogether evoking the intimacy of a Parisian salon with unmistakable London grandeur.

The Afternoon Tea itself is served within this richly atmospheric dining room and follows the traditional three-course structure, though executed with a distinctive flourish.

The savoury course presents an elegant assortment of finger sandwiches and delicate canapés. Alongside familiar classics such as cucumber with cream cheese, one finds more indulgent creations: egg mimosa elevated with black truffle, and Scottish smoked salmon paired with lemon cream cheese or even served upon a buttery croissant with salmon roe. Each bite is carefully composed, balancing refinement with a quiet sense of indulgence.

This is followed by the quintessential scones, served warm. Both plain and fruit varieties are offered, accompanied by clotted cream, strawberry preserve, and a bright, citrusy lemon curd.

The final course is a patisserie selection that feels almost theatrical in its presentation. Intricately crafted cakes, such as pistachio and raspberry Battenberg, Earl Grey-infused choux, and fruit-laced mousses are as visually striking as they are delicately flavoured. Seasonal influences and artistic precision define this course, bringing the experience to a graceful and memorable close.

Accompanying the experience is a refined selection of Newby teas, with options ranging from floral blends to richer, more aromatic infusions, while those seeking an extra flourish may opt for a sparkling or Champagne variation.

Altogether, Afternoon Tea at L’Oscar is not merely a leisurely indulgence but a carefully choreographed experience one that marries history, artistry, and gastronomy in a setting that feels both intimate and quietly spectacular.
