Review: Claude Monet Afternoon Tea at The Mirror Room at Rosewood London
Afternoon tea in London is often about tradition, but at Mirror Room inside Rosewood London, the Claude Monet Art Afternoon Tea feels more like a carefully choreographed culinary exhibition. Rather than simply serving sandwiches and cakes on a silver stand, Rosewood has transformed the experience into an immersive tribute to Monet’s world and the painter’s fascination with colour, texture and light.

What immediately sets this Afternoon Tea apart from many luxury hotel offerings is its structure. Most traditional Afternoon Teas follow a predictable sequence of finger sandwiches, scones and pastries. Rosewood instead creates a multi-course progression that feels closer to fine dining. Guests begin with elegant savoury canapés and refined bites, including lobster and prawn profiteroles and my personal favourite, the camembert custard tartlets. These opening courses are beautifully balanced, which are a wonderful introduction to the savoury selection. which include traditional flavours such a egg and salmon, but are presented and flavoured in the most artistic manner.

Then comes one of the most distinctive touches: the palate transition between savoury and sweet. Rosewood introduces a delicate pre-dessert course of jasmine tea cream with strawberries and lemon madeleines, acting almost as a palate cleanser before the main pâtisserie finale. It is a thoughtful detail rarely seen in Afternoon Tea service and demonstrates how much consideration has gone into pacing the experience. Instead of rushing from sandwiches to sweet, the menu slowly guides guests through layers of flavour and texture.

The artistry truly peaks with the signature 'Art Cakes', each inspired by one of Monet’s masterpieces. These are technically ambitious pâtisserie pieces that reflect immense craftsmanship from Executive Pastry Chef Mark Perkins and his team. The Water Lily Pond cake combines pistachio, cherry blossom and morello cherry jelly in a delicate composition that mirrors Monet’s famous floating gardens. Impression, Sunrise translates the painter’s soft orange glow into peach, vanilla and raspberry elements, while Woman with a Parasol layers apricot, rosemary and tea-infused ganache beneath an elegant green chocolate parasol. Every component has clearly been designed not only to resemble the artwork visually, but also to evoke mood and seasonality through flavour.
What makes Rosewood’s Art Afternoon Tea especially impressive is the consistency of the concept over the years. Previous editions inspired by Hokusai, Van Gogh, Rodin and Pop Art demonstrate that this is not a one-off gimmick but a long-standing creative programme rooted in storytelling and research. Each menu appears to involve extensive historical and artistic interpretation, with pastry techniques adapted specifically to reflect the featured artist’s style and cultural background.
The service also plays a major role in elevating the experience. Staff are knowledgeable without feeling overly formal, and one of the most appreciated touches is the ability to change teas throughout the afternoon. Rather than being limited to a single pot, guests are encouraged to explore the tea menu across courses, allowing floral blends to accompany lighter pastries and deeper black teas to pair with richer cakes. This flexibility transforms the tea pairing into part of the experience itself rather than an afterthought.
The setting of the Mirror Room enhances everything further. Unlike some grand hotel tea lounges that can feel crowded or impersonal, the room balances intimacy with theatricality. Mirrored walls, warm lighting and contemporary art references create a space that feels luxurious yet relaxed, perfectly suited to an experience built around visual storytelling.
Ultimately, the Claude Monet Art Afternoon Tea succeeds because it goes far beyond presentation. The experience feels meticulously curated from beginning to end: the progression of courses, the artistic research behind each pastry, the tea pairings, the attentive staff, and the seamless balance between fine dining and traditional Afternoon Tea ritual.
