Review: Royal Afternoon Tea at The Rubens at The Palace
There are few locations in London quite as fitting for a traditional Afternoon Tea as The Rubens at the Palace. Situated directly opposite Buckingham Palace, this beautiful hotel offers a rather special setting in which to enjoy one of Britain's most cherished traditions.
We settled into the beautiful Palace Lounge, an elegant and welcoming space with rich furnishings, comfortable seating and a wonderful atmosphere. With views across the Royal Mews and Buckingham Palace just moments away, it is a setting that feels wonderfully connected to its royal surroundings. The staff were attentive throughout, striking just the right balance between being on hand when needed and allowing us to enjoy the occasion at our own pace.

One of the things I particularly appreciated was the choice available for guests with different dietary requirements. Whether vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or halal, there are thoughtfully prepared alternatives, meaning that everyone can enjoy the experience.

Before long, the three-tier stand arrived at our table, beautifully presented and filled with all the elements that make Afternoon Tea such a pleasure. We began with the savoury selection, which offered a lovely variety of flavours and textures. From the salt beef with sauerkraut and mustard on caraway bread to the smoked salmon with chive cream cheese, there was plenty to enjoy. The coronation chicken, with its gentle spice and toasted almonds, was another lovely combination, while the egg mayonnaise and watercress and Barber's cheddar with plum tomato brought something a little more traditional to the selection. I particularly enjoyed the variety of breads, which added different textures to each bite.

Next came the warm scones, served with clotted cream, homemade seasonal preserve and lemon curd. A real highlight, they were just as they should be: lovely and warm, with that comforting combination of buttery scone, rich cream and the freshness of lemon curd.

The final tier was dedicated to the patisserie, and it was a lovely way to finish. The selection included carrot and walnut cake, apple and blackberry choux, a caramel and chocolate tart and the Jaffa Cake Crown. Each offered something different, from fruity and delicate flavours to richer chocolate notes, with beautiful presentation throughout.
What makes Afternoon Tea at The Rubens so enjoyable is the way everything comes together. The setting, the views, the thoughtful service and the beautifully prepared food all contribute to an experience that feels both special and relaxed. It is a wonderful place to pause, enjoy a little indulgence and take in the surroundings of one of London's most iconic landmarks.
